ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Matt Bazsika scored the tying basket with five seconds remaining in regulation, then gave Albright College the lead for good in overtime as the Lions held off Elizabethtown College 69-65 in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Baszika, who finished with 10 points, helped the Lions recover after the Blue Jays erased a 61-53 deficit by scoring 10 straight points in a span of 3 minutes, 30 seconds to take a 63-61 lead.

Phil Hall led all players with 14 points and 11 rebounds while brother Derek Hall added nine points and a game-high 13 boards off the bench for Albright (13-7 overall, 4-3 Commonwealth), which went scoreless for just over five minutes before Baszika's tying hoop.

Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) shared the team lead in scoring for the Blue Jays (10-9 overall, 4-3 Commonwealth), who shot 35.5 percent (22-for-65) from the field in the game including 3-for-17 from three-point range.

Other than two brief one-point leads in the opening minutes, Elizabethtown trailed the entire contest until Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) hit a layup with 1:41 to go to give the Blue Jays a 63-61 lead.

Albright led 54-47 with 7:54 to play, but three-pointers by Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) and Church brought Elizabethtown to within 54-53 with 6:36 to go.

However, a three-pointer on the Lions' next possession by Matt Ashcroft sparked a 7-0 run that extended Albright's lead to 61-53 with 5:11 left. Elizabethtown countered with two foul shots from Flanagan, a layup by McConnell and two free throws by Houseal to move within 61-59 with 4:09 to go.

A thunderous baseline dunk by Church brought the Thompson Gymnasium crowd to its feet and tied the score at 61-61 with 2:26 to go, setting up McConnell's go-ahead hoop one possession later. But, the Lions were able to knot the game in the closing seconds and a last-ditch three-point attempt by the Blue Jays was off the mark, forcing overtime.

Albright led 33-28 at halftime behing eight points from Phil Hall and five each from Zac Shaeffer and Ashcroft. Flanagan and Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) shared the team lead in scoring in the first half for Elizabethtown with seven points each.

McConnell and Houseal joined Flanagan and Church in double figures for Elizabethtown with 10 points each, while Houseal led the Blue Jays with nine rebounds. Ashcroft tallied 10 points off the bench for Albright, including a pair of three-pointers.

Knights Fall to Elizabethtown 72-58

GLENSIDE, PA: 1/24/09 - Elizabethtown College handed the Knights of Arcadia University their first Commonwealth Conference home loss of the season, defeating the Knights 72-58 in a heated battle of conference rivals. The Blue Jays improve to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the league while the Knights drop to 7-10 overall and 2-3 against Commonwealth opponents.

The fast paced first half featured three lead changes early on before the Blue Jays went up by 11 with 4:20 remaining. But junior Damien Palantino nailed back-to-back treys for the Knights right before senior Bobby Mulholland swished his own three point bucket to make it a 31-29 game as the Knights trailed by only four at the half, 33-29.

While the Blue Jays would never relinquish their lead, Arcadia kept it close in the second half. Senior Blaise Pepitone rang home his first three pointer of the game at 5:32, brining the Knights to within six, 58-52 but Mark Vogel drained a triple on a second attempt for Elizabethtown at 5:19 to take a 61-52 lead as the Blue Jays enjoyed the double-bonus through regulation, going onto to win 72-58.

Elizabethtown's Keith Fogel led all scorer's with 25 points on 8-13 shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-6 from the line. Mike Church added a dozen for the Blue Jays. Palantino led the Knights with 15 while freshman Khalief Trawick added a dozen with 4 assists. Mulholland scored 8 points and pulled down a team high 6 rebounds for Arcadia. Senior Terell Varnado added 9 points and 5 defensive caroms.

The Blue Jays nailed 53% from beyond the arc, 45% from the floor and were 60% from the charity stripe while the Knights struggled form long range, hitting just 33% and shot only 41% from the floor and a season low 28% from the stripe.

Arcadia returns to the court at Albright College on Wednesday, January 28 for an 8 PM tip in Commonwealth play.

Arcardia Preview

The Blue Jays travel down the turnpike to take on the Arcadia University Knights. Following are a couple of previews of Saturday's opponent.

First, from the 2008-2009 Arcadia University Seaon Prospectus:

2008-2009 Season Preview

As the Arcadia Men’s Basketball team begins their first season in the Commonwealth Conference, they will look to improve on last year’s 12-13 record and make it over the final hurdle that stands between them and post-season play. They finished the 2007-08 season 6-6 in the Freedom conference, just one win shy of clinching a playoff berth. For the 2008-09 season, head coach Pat Dorney (6th season) will count on his returning players to bring leadership and experience to the team in order to punch a ticket to the Commonwealth tournament in late February.

While the Knights will have to replace the leadership and scoring ability of last year’s graduates, Sterling Green ‘08, Kevin Brown ‘08, and 1,000 point scorer, Eric Elliott ‘08, the team has nine returning players, including the trio of senior captains, Bobby Mulholland (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood), Blaise Pepitone (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart), and Terell Varnado (Forest Hills, MD/Archbishop Curly). All three veterans are talented wing players who have proven themselves ready to take on a leadership role in their final year. Coach Dorney describes Varnado as a big, strong wing that can defend, rebound and play with high energy. Pepitone is a versatile and able to play multiple positions on the floor. Mulholland returns as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13.2 ppg last year as all three of these seniors will be major contributors on and off the court this season.

The remaining returning players consist of juniors Damien Palantino (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge), Daune Robinson (Philadelphia,PA/Overbrook), and Steve Sharp (Media, PA/Penncrest). Palantino is a feisty guard that can shoot in the tightest of situations, Sharp is a wing player with long range and Robinson has the versatility to play both inside and out. The returning sophomores include Darrell Mills (Philadelphia, PA/Engineering & Sciences), Alexis Alfonso (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May), and Brett Sharpe (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern). Coach Dorney is looking to these returners to bring leadership on and off the court and help the new members learn the ropes of NCAA basketball.

The newcomers to the team include freshmen Andrew Vose (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge), Khalief Trawick (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Learning Center), Jason Thompson (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township), Billy Beck (New Providence, NJ/New Providence), Dan Drennen (Willow Grove, PA/Bishop McDevitt), and Marcus Booker (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) as well as junior transfer Dwayne Bradley (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King). These players have been working hard in practice during preseason and will look to contribute when the season gets underway.

Coach Dorney returns a veteran coaching staff to the sideline this year in assistant coaches Ryan Kilkenney, Chris Rumsey, Omar Wells and George Dillon. Dorney boasts of the team’s depth, reporting to have “nine to eleven players who will all be competing for minutes through the preseason. We are not a big team but we are long and athletic.”

The Knights have a tough schedule ahead of them, but are more than ready for the challenge when they open the season on Saturday, November 15 at home against Rowan University at 4 PM. Commonwealth Conference play opens up against Coach Dorney’s Alma Matter, Lebanon
Valley College on January 7.

From the MAC Commonwealth Conference Pre-season Poll:

Arcadia (12-13, 6-6) places seventh in the poll with 15 points. The Knights look to overcome last season’s loss to Manhattanville that would have secured them a playoff berth in the Freedom Conference. Arcadia, while losing Sterling Green, Eric Elliott, and Kevin Brown, bring back seniors Bobby Mulholland Terrell Varnado, Blaise Pepitone, and Damien Palentino. Mulholland led the Knights last season in points scored in the conference (15.3 ppg) while averaging over 30 minutes per start. Green, who was a three-year player for the Knights, finished his career as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athlete (716 points, 127 assists, 251 rebounds, 107 steals). In addition, Elliott was a 1,000-point scorer for Arcadia during his career.

Hopefully, we'll have a nice crowd to cheer on the guys. If you can't make it to the game, be sure to follow Live Stats for all the action.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) drilled four three-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points as Elizabethtown College routed Lebanon Valley College 70-53 in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Thompson Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) added 15 points and seven rebounds as the Blue Jays (9-8 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field as a team and led by as many as 23 points in the second half against the Flying Dutchmen (7-9 overall, 1-4 Commonwealth).

Dan Dunkelberger led Lebanon Valley with 11 points, while Kyle Enoch finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and six steals and became the 31st player in program history to reach 1,000 points on a three-pointer with 9:13 to play.

Elizabethtown led from the game's opening possession, opening up a lead that grew to 36-18 at halftime. Fogel led all players with 13 points in the first half as the Blue Jays shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the field and forced the Flying Dutchmen into 15 turnovers.

The Blue Jays continued to maintain a sizable second-half lead, opening their advantage to as many as 23 points at 56-33 with 10:40 to go. The 17-point margin of victory was the closest that the Dutchmen would get over the final 20 minutes of play.

Strong play came from Elizabethtown's post players, as starting center Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) finished with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists while backups Bryan Harrity (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) and Chris Hill (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added seven and six points, respectively.

Lebanon Valley finished 16-for-47 (34.0 percent) from the field as a team, including 4-for-19 from three-point range. A 21-9 disparity in fouls allowed the Dutchmen to go to the line 28 times compared to seven attempts for the Blue Jays, but Lebanon Valley hit just 17 shots (60.7 percent).

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Kyle Enoch scored his 1,000th career point, but that was just about the only highlight for Lebanon Valley as they were routed, 70-53, by Elizabethtown College in a mid-week Commonwealth Conference game at Thompson Gym.

Enoch became the 31st student-athlete in program history to reach the millennium mark when he drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 9:13 left in the second half.

The Dutchmen (7-9, 1-4 CC) turned the ball over 15 times in the first half to fall into an 18-point halftime hole that they never climbed out of. The Blue Jays (9-8, 3-2 CC) shot a solid 48.3 percent overall and were led by 18 points from Joe Flanagan.

Dan Dunkelberger led LVC scorers with 11 points. Enoch finished with 10 and six steals, and now has 1,004 career points.

Elizabethtown was effective in transition all night long, capitalizing on LVC miscues throughout the game. After LVC pulled within a point in the early going, E-town sparked a 7-0 run off a pair of LVC turnovers, then used a Keith Fogel fastbreak off a steal to take the lead to double digits. Their lead never fell below 10 as the Blue Jays ended the half with a 7-0 spurt to take an 18-point halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same as Mike Church made the opening layup to go up 20. The Blue Jay lead hovered around that mark for the rest of the game as LVC simply couldn't kick-start its own offense while solving E-town's uptempo play.

LVC will take a break from conference play and visit SUNY Cortland on Sunday.

From the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal:

Elizabethtown goes on defensive

Schaffer, Fogel spark win over rival LVC, 70-53

Intelligencer Journal
Published: Jan 22, 200901:46 EST
Elizabethtown

By JASON FULGINITI, Sports Writer

Considering they're generally two of the smaller guys on the court, it might seem hard to view Phil Schaffer and Keith Fogel as weapons for Elizabethtown College's men's basketball team.

But failing to do so would also be a grave mistake.

And as of Wednesday night, you can count Lebanon Valley as one of the teams that understands that.

Ignited by the floor leadership of Schaffer, a 5-foot-9 senior point guard, and 13 first-half points from Fogel, a 6-foot sophomore guard, Elizabethtown jumped out to a 36-18 halftime lead before rolling to a 70-53 victory over Commonwealth Conference rival LVC Wednesday night in E-town's Thompson Gym.

Sophomore forward and Lancaster Mennonite product Joe Flanagan finished with a game-high 18 points for the Blue Jays, while Fogel chipped in 15 to go with his game-high seven rebounds.

Junior center Mike Church, a Solanco graduate, also hauled down seven boards for E-town, which used a stifling defensive energy to create 15 LVC turnovers in the first half and set the early tone.

"We defended with a presence tonight and I thought we shared the ball well," E-town coach Bob Schlosser said afterward. "At this time of year it's not so much physical as it is mental, and we got ourselves ready to play tonight. We wanted to come out and play hard and with a lot of energy and we did."

It was the kind of win, perhaps, that couldn't have come at a better time for the Jays (9-8 overall, 3-2 CC), who face a tough road game at Arcadia Saturday, before getting a bye next week.

"If you drop this one, not only are you 2-3 (with seven conference games remaining), but you lost a home game," Schlosser said. "And we want to get to a point in two or three weeks where we can control our own destiny (for making the conference playoffs). And right now, we can still control that."

Sparked by an all-around defensive effort, E-town wasted little time taking control against the Flying Dutchmen (7-9, 1-4), who were pressured into a 6-for-20 shooting performance from the floor in the first half, including a dismal 1-for-9 clip from behind the 3-point line.

Credit some of that to the energy and animated vocal leadership of Schaffer.

"My role sometimes is obviously not about scoring, it's getting guys to play hard," said Schaffer, who finished with two points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals. "To say what (my motivation) is, it's just that I pride myself on defense."

Meanwhile, Fogel began taking care of matters on the other end, especially after Flanagan hit a jumper that gave E-town an 18-10 lead with 13:54 left before the break.

Starting with a layup that pushed the Jays' advantage to 20-10 with 12:26 left in the half, Fogel scored 11 of E-town's next 18 points — fueling an 18-8 run that put the Jays up 36-18 at intermission.

E-town eventually boosted its lead to 23 points (58-35) in the second half.

Led by Fogel (7-for-13) and Flanagan (7-for-15), E-town shot 49.2 (30-61) percent from the floor as a team by game's end, including a 51.6 percent mark in the first half.

Not surprisingly, many of those buckets came in transition off of the 20 turnovers LVC committed on the night.

Perhaps the lone highlight for the Dutchmen Wednesday came from senior guard and Hempfield grad Kyle Enoch (10 points), who drained a 3-pointer with 9:13 left in the game to cross the 1,000 point plateau for his career.

"I took that personally," Schaffer said. "(Enoch) is a good player, but we wanted to keep him from getting that (milestone) tonight."

Always the defender.

And therefore, always a weapon.

LVC spin continues at E-town

By JEFFREY FALK
Daily News Sportswriter

Updated: 01/22/2009 10:45:57 AM EST

ELIZABETHTOWN — It’s still trying to figure out exactly what it’s good at.

It’s still groping for player combinations that work well together.

It’s still trying to identify its personality.

The 16th game on the Lebanon Valley College men’s basketball team’s 2008-09 schedule was last night’s 70-53 loss at Elizabethtown, its fourth in its last five outings. The Flying Dutchmen appeared confused and disorganized during the first half, one of their poorest 20-minute stretches of the year.

LVC never led and in falling into a 36-18 intermission hole shot the ball at a 30-percent clip and was guilty of 15 turnovers. The Blue Jays enjoyed a 16-2 first-half advantage in points off of turnovers.

Lebanon Valley fell to 7-9 overall and 1-4 in the Commonwealth Conference. Elizabethtown moved to 9-8 on the year and 3-2 in the conference.

“We’re fine,” said Lebanon Valley head coach Brad McAlester when asked about his team’s identity. “I think we’re pretty good at dribble drive. We get to the foul line. But we can’t turn the ball over that much.”

It was a 9-8 game four minutes in when the Blue Jays stepped on the accelerator. What ensued was a frantic 11-2 burst that gave E-town a 20-10 margin.

Then the Blue Jays notched the last seven points of the half to lengthen a 29-18 lead.

“Certain guys’ leadership I’m happy with,” said McAlester.

“Austin Kearns is a good leader. Dunk (Dan Dunkelberger) is a good leader.

“Anytime you lose by 17 points, you’re frustrated,” added McAlester. “They (the Blue Jays) just played more aggressive than us. We had 15 turnovers (in the first half). They beat us up pretty good.”

Dunkelberger led LVC with 11 points, and senior teammate Kyle Enoch notched 10, including the 1,000th of his career. Enoch entered the fray needing six to reach the coveted career plateau and got it on a 3-point field goal with 9:13 left that made it 58-38 E-town.

Elizabethtown freshman guard and former Cedar Crest standout Kyle McConnell scored four points in 13 minutes of action.

“It was fine,” McAlester said of his team’s focus. “They (the Blue Jays) played aggressive. That’s why we played poorly. We played better in the second half, but we played even. We had five turnovers in the second half.”

The Flying Dutchmen never seriously threatened the Blue Jays in the second stanza. The closest they could come was 40-23 on an Enoch trey 2:37 after halftime.

“We’ve got to get better,” said McAlester. “We’ve got to keep practicing, keep shooting and make good decisions.”

Sosna had 15 points and eight rebounds with junior Jamarr Johnson (Pittsgrove, NJ) adding 10. Sophomore Jarrell Nelson (Waldorf, MD) and freshman Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) scored eight points apiece off the bench.

Widener led by as many as 68-48 with 8:39 remaining and never trailed. It remains tied atop the conference with Arcadia and Albright.

Keith Fogel scored 10 points with Mike Church adding nine and seven rebounds for the Blue Jays, who shot only 40 percent (25-of-62) from the floor and 50 percent (13-of-26) from the line.

Widener's press stops Blue Jays

Sunday News

By MIKE GROSS, Assistant Sports Editor

Maybe part of this had to do with the old Al McGuire adage that a pressing team doesn't like to be pressed.

Elizabethtown College basketball coach Bob Schlosser saw something more insidious in his team's 80-69 loss to Widener Saturday."I thought our starters and upperclassmen were intimidated," Schlosser stated flatly after his team fell to .500 both overall (8-8) and in the Commonwealth Conference (2-2).

That's why Schlosser kept his team in a quiet locker room for a long while afterward. And why the starters watched glumly from the bench as reserves put together a spirited, if hopeless, run from down 20 to as close as 78-69 in the final minute.

"That run was simply about making hustle plays," Schlosser said. "We've got a couple starters who may be getting a little complacent. I've got to put guys in who are going to play with some energy."

Widener (11-4, 2-1) plays the same, up-tempo, 94-foot style Schlosser likes. But the Pride is bigger, quicker and more athletic.

"We know there's gonna be turnovers when we play them, because that's how they play," said Schlosser.

"I didn't think the problem was our offense. The problem was we let them have to many easy ones."

Widener also has a piece the Blue Jays don't in Charles Jones, an all-conference senior guard who can get his own shot and score in a variety of ways. He scored 18 in just 23 minutes.

The Pride controlled this one most of the way, but Jones left with his second foul, on a charge after scoring, with 2:40 left in the first half.

The Jays made a little stand from then to intermission, and Joe Flanagan made a deep three at the halftime buzzer to make it 40-31.

E-town was 3-for-10 from the foul line and had committed 15 turnovers, so the fact that it wasn't buried was small reason for optimism.

The Jays briefly pulled within seven, on Josh Houseal's inside hoop, early in the second half. But Widener kept cranking up the juice.

E-town soon had a stretch of six straight empty possession, and an old-style three-point play by Widener's Matt Sosna (15 points, eight rebounds) pushed the lead to 52-35.

That was about it.

"They're better than we are," Schlosser said, "but I don't think they're 20 points better than we are."

Keith Fogel led E-town with 10 points. Reserve big man Chris Hill added nine in 21 hustling minutes.

The Jays got out-rebounded (if only 40-37), had 23 turnovers, shot just 40 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line (13-of-26).

"We've been inconsistent from the line," Schlosser said. "It's all mental. We work on it and talk about it all the time, but when the lights go on, you've got to make them."

The Jays have only two conference losses and everybody has at least one, with eight games left. They host last-place Lebanon Valley Wednesday.

The situation isn't desperate. Yet.

"You can talk about it all you want, but the bottom line is, what are we gonna do Wednesday?" Schlosser said.

"It's a a league game, and we're at home. Do we have to win? No, but we have to play better."

READING, Pa. --- Brothers Phil and Derek Hall combined for 39 points and Albright College shot 60.4 percent from the field in a 93-80 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Bollman Center on Wednesday night.

Phil Hall went 10-for-15 from the field and scored a game-high 24 points while Derek Hall hit all five of his field-goal attempts and added 15 points for the Lions (11-5 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth), who led 46-32 at halftime and withstood a 12-0 second-half run by the Blue Jays (8-7 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth).

Four players scored in double figures for Elizabethtown, with Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) leading the way with 15 points and seven rebounds and Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) adding a career-high 14 points.

Albright took a 46-32 lead to halftime on the strength of 6-for-13 shooting from three-point range. Phil Hall led the Lions with 11 points followed by Derek Hall with 10, while Houseal led the Blue Jays with 11 points in the opening half.

The Lions led 66-49 with 12:35 to go, but the Blue Jays scored 12 straight points to cut the deficit to 66-61 following two free throws by Church with 10:13 to go. However, a putback by Phil Hall and a three-point play by Matt Bazsika pushed Albright ahead 71-61 with 9:33 left and Elizabethtown would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.

Joining Church and Houseal in double figures for Elizabethtown were Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) with 12 points and Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) with 11 points. Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) added seven points and six assists for the Blue Jays, who committed just six turnovers as a team.

Zac Shaeffer tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Lions, while Bazsika added nine points and four boards. Albright finished with a commanding 42-26 edge in rebounds over Elizabethtown, as Andre Murphy matched Shaeffer for the team high in boards with seven.

Hall Brothers Guide Albright Men’s Basketball to Conference Win

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

READING, PA - The offensive hot streak of senior center Phil Hall (Northampton, PA/Northampton) continued Wednesday evening as the host Lions (11-5/2-1 CC) handed the visiting Blue Jays (8-7/2-1 CC) their first conference loss of the season defeating them by the final score of 93-80 in the Bollman Center.

Hall who recorded his eighth consecutive game with 10 points or more was joined by his younger brother Derek Hall (Northampton, PA/Northampton) as the two combined for 39 points respectively. Big brother Phil totaled 24 points on the evening, while Derek recorded a career best 15 points in the conference win. Of the two Derek had quite the showing from the field shooting a perfect 5-for-5 which included a 2-for-2 performance from three point range. At the free throw line the six-foot-10 inch freshman made three of his four attempts.

Sophomore Zac Shaeffer (Lancaster, PA/Lempeter-Strasburg) also continued his hot streak as well totaling 16 points on the night shooting 50% (4-for-8) from the floor and 100% (5-for-5) from the give me line. Shaeffer along with Andre Murphy (Philadelphia, PA/Caver High School) led the contest in rebounding as two each earned seven boards a piece.

For the visiting Blue Jays four of their starting five finished in double-digits with Mike Church leading the way with 15 points while also managing the game high seven rebounds as well. Next in line was Josh Houseal with 14 points, followed by Keith Fogel with 12, and Joe Flanagan with 11.

As a team, the Lions not only dominated their opponents from the field shooting over 60%, but they also proved to be the top rebounding team as well pulling down 16 more boards then the Blue Jays (42-26).

Albright trailed E-town only once in the entire contest and that was in the first five minutes.

Following that minor let down, the Red and White regained their composure and took control of the scoreboard.

In just the first 10 minutes alone, the Lions had built themselves a solid lead over the Blue Jays, which they continued to add to throughout the first 20 minutes of play. Just before the half ended, Shaeffer was able to score a last second three point basket which just elevated Albright’s momentum even more.

However that momentum would begin to fade as the second half progressed. Despite having a 17 point lead with 12:35 to play, the Blue Jays in a matter of three minutes would cut that lead down to five following a 12-0 run. With it looking as if though E-town was about to make a push to earn their second lead of the night, Albright led by Phil Hall battled back once again regaining their double-digit lead as the Red and White posted 8-0 run of their own.

The Lions quick offensive turn around was crucial in stopping any chance of a Blue Jays comeback. Albright continued hold a substantial lead over their opponent throughout the final moments of the contest. With Wednesday’s victory, Albright is now in a three way tie for first place in the Commonwealth Conference. Joining the Lions atop the conference are Elizabethtown and Lycoming College (8-5/2-1 CC).

Albright will face Lycoming College next Saturday in Williamsport, PA. However the Lions will first travel to Grantham, PA to take on the Falcons of Messiah College on Tuesday with game time set for 8 p.m.

Size matters: Jays can't stop Lions' Hall brothers

By Rich Scarcella
Reading Eagle

Rick Ferry has enjoyed a successful career as coach of the Albright men's basketball team.

So, with 6-11 senior Phil Hall and 6-10 freshman Derek Hall on the roster, Ferry's smart enough to keep his offensive philosophy simple.

"No one (in the Commonwealth Conference) has size like the Hall brothers," Ferry said. "We have to continue to find ways to utilize that (advantage). We're seeing zones and double-teams, unique double-teams.

"We're not going to force it inside, but we have to find ways to get it to them."

Phil and Derek Hall towered over Elizabethtown, combining for 39 points and 12 rebounds in the Lions' convincing 93-80 victory Wednesday night at Bollman Center.

Without a defender taller than 6-5, the Blue Jays (2-1, 8-7) had no answer for Phil, who scored 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting, or Derek, who had a career-high 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting.

Albright (2-1, 11-5) moved into a three-way tie for first place by fending off a second-half charge by Elizabethtown, which trimmed a 17-point lead to 66-61 with a 12-0 run. Ferry called a timeout, hoping to disrupt the Jays and calm the Lions.

"I told them to relax and settle down," he said. "Take it one possession at a time. 'They made their run. Now it's time for us to play basketball.' "

After the break, the Hall brothers and 6-6 Matt Bazsika scored 16 of Albright's next 21 points as the Lions opened an 87-73 lead with 4:21 left and put it away.

"Whenever we take our time, the ball ends up going down low," Ferry said. "It's implied when you have two 7-footers on the floor."

Phil Hall arrived at Albright four years ago from Northampton as a quirky 6-9 left-hander who fancied himself as a shooting guard. He made himself into a 6-11, 265-pound brute by watching and guarding strong post players such as Trevor Deeter and Albert Medoro in practice the last four seasons.

Hall leads the Lions with 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.

"The coaches made me work on post moves every day for the last four years," he said. "It had to click at some point."

Derek, his brother, came to Albright this season as a more skilled player than Phil was at the same age. He also likes to shoot from the perimeter, draining both of his 3-pointers against the Jays.

"It's great having him here," Phil said. "I like it. He gets to learn for a year under me. It can only benefit him."

It's certainly benefiting the Lions, who received 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Zac Shaeffer. Central Catholic grad Matt Ashcroft had seven points off the bench. They have Saturday off before going on the road twice next week for games at Messiah and Lycoming.

Neither team has the size Albright has with the Hall brothers.

"Knowing no one can match up with me puts my confidence through the roof," Phil Hall said. "I know I have a mismatch every time."

Mike Church scored 15 points for Elizabethtown and Josh Houseal had 14. Tulpehocken product Brady Haughney, a sophomore, had two points and four rebounds in a season-high 17 minutes.

Joe Flanagan Named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College sophomore swingman Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) has been named the Commonwealth Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 11, the conference office announced Monday.

Flanagan was the game's high scorer in Blue Jay wins over Lycoming College and Messiah College last week. He scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 68-61 victory at Lycoming on Wednesday, then scored a career-high 23 points and went 9-for-10 from the field in a 71-59 win over Messiah on Saturday.

Flanagan, who averaged 21.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 73.7 percent from the field for the week, has scored in double figures in all but one of Elizabethtown's 14 games this season. He leads the Blue Jays and is ranked third in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring average at 15.7 points per game.

Elizabethtown (8-6 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) returns to action on Wednesday at Albright College beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Sunday Morning Coverage

From The Lancaster Sunday News:

E-town shuts down Messiah, 71-59

Vogel's timely trey keys 71-59 victory

Sunday News
Elizabethtown

By GORDIE JONES, Correspondent

Just about every game has been a tractor pull for the Elizabethtown men's basketball team, as might be expected of a club that has decent, but hardly overwhelming, talent.

There have been occasions when the Blue Jays have found someone (or several someones) to dig them out of the muck; their seven victories entering Saturday afternoon's Commonwealth Conference meeting with Messiah had come by a little more than five points a game.

But there also were times when E-town had been buried. Its six losses had come by an average of 12 points apiece.

Saturday's game followed the first of those scenarios. And the guy manning the shovel was none other than sophomore guard Mark Vogel, a seldom-used reserve from Hempfield.

It was his 3-pointer with three minutes left — his first of the season — that gave the Jays a critical boost in a typically taut affair, as they beat the Falcons 71-59 to improve to 2-0 in conference play, 8-6 overall.

"He is a very good shooter," coach Bob Schlosser said.

But coming in, Vogel had missed 10 of 11 shots, including all four of his 3-point attempts, while playing just 30 minutes over five games.

He was on the floor down the stretch, though, and alone in the right corner when point guard Phil Schaffer passed him the ball. The Jays, who had led most of the night but never comfortably, were nursing a 57-52 advantage.

"You've got to do what you've got to do," Schlosser said.

And Vogel did, splashing in the trey that increased the lead to eight.

E-town tacked on the next six points as well, four of those by sophomore guard Joe Flanagan, to go up 66-52.

Flanagan, a Lancaster Mennonite graduate, finished with a career-high 23.

Keith Fogel, another sophomore guard, scored 21 to match his career best.

But Vogel's basket was the obvious back-breaker.

"That's his shot," Flanagan said.

"Coach keeps telling me to look for my shot in the game, so that's what I try to do," Vogel said. "My shooting's down. I'm playing well in the JV games. I always keep going at it. I was a great shooter in high school, but I haven't been hot right now. It will come back."

Before Saturday, his greatest contribution had likely come Wednesday, when after the Jays won at Lycoming he surprised Schlosser and everyone else by standing up in the locker room and proclaiming it "a great team victory" — even though Vogel didn't play at all.

"We're all in this together," he said. "We don't know whose day it's going to be, so you have to be ready. Everybody's going to get their shot one time."

The Jays surely took Messiah's best shot Saturday. The Falcons (0-1, 2-11) fell into a 29-16 hole early but then reeled off 13 straight points, including 3-pointers by Jamie Yoder (another Lancaster Mennonite grad), Kyle Snyder and Josh Hartman, to draw even.

Fogel's basket gave E-town a two-point lead at the break, and the hosts increased that to seven early in the second half. But Messiah narrowed the gap to one, and had a chance to go ahead when Hartman squared up from the arc with 8:26 left.

He missed, but three minutes later it was 53-50, E-town. Flanagan made a free throw, then a 3-pointer. Messiah's Colton Reitz answered with a layup.

It was 57-52. Enter Vogel, shovel in hand.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) finished with a career-high 23 points as Elizabethtown College improved to 2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference with a 71-59 victory over Messiah College at Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) equaled his career high with 21 points for the Blue Jays (8-6 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth), who shot a sizzling 58.3 percent (21-for-36) from the field in the game including 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) in the second half.

Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) also reached double figures with 13 points for Elizabethtown, while Kyle McConnell (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) went 8-for-8 from the foul line and finished with 10 points.

Flanagan, whose previous high was 21 points against Marymount University on Nov. 25, went 9-for-10 from the field including 2-for-2 from three-point range, and hit 3-for-4 from the foul line for the Blue Jays.

Fogel, who also came up with five steals, hit 7-for-12 from the floor including two three-pointers, and went 5-for-5 from the line to extend his streak of consecutive made free throws to 21.

Jason Miller led the Falcons (2-11 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) with 17 points and five assists, but Messiah committed 25 turnovers in suffering its sixth straight loss.

Elizabethtown led 29-16 with 5:46 left in the first half, but the Falcons scored the next 13 points to tie the game at 29-29 on a layup by Colton Reitz with 2:13 left in the half. A layup by Fogel gave the Blue Jays a 31-29 lead at halftime, part of his game-high 10-point effort in the opening half.

The Blue Jays never trailed in the second half, but saw the Falcons cut what was a seven-point deficit down to 46-45 on a fast-break layup by Miller with 9:04 remaining. Messiah trailed 53-50 with 5:26 to go, but clutch three-pointers by Flanagan and Mark Vogel (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) sparked a 13-2 run that extended the Elizabethtown advantageto 66-52 with 1:22 left.

Jamie Yoder joined Miller in double figures for Messiah with 11 points, but the Falcons shot 48.9 percent (22-for-45) from the field as a team including 8-for-25 from three-point range.

Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) led all players with eight assists in 28 minutes of action for the Blue Jays, while Flanagan and Church shared the team led with five rebounds each.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- A game-high 19 points from Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) lifted Elizabethtown College to a 68-61 win at Lycoming College in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Lamade Gymnasium.

Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) added 16 points for the Blue Jays (7-6 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth), who led for the game's final 30 minutes despite seeing the Warriors (6-5 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) nearly erase a 13-point second-half deficit.

Flanagan, who sank three three-pointers to extend his streak of making at least one trey in each of Elizabethtown's 13 games this season, also pulled a team-high seven rebounds as the Blue Jays won in their first conference road game of the season for the first time since 2002-03.

Greg Sye led Lycoming with 15 points, while Brandon Wilkinson came off the Warrior bench to add all 14 of his points in the second half. Eric Anthony added 12 points in defeat for Lycoming, which forced Elizabethtown into just eight turnovers on the evening.

The Blue Jays held a 51-38 lead with 11:53 remaining following a basket from Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield), but the Warriors scored the next 10 points to cut the Elizabethtown advantage to 51-48 with 8:08 to go.

Elizabethtown regained an eight-point lead at 60-52 with 2:36 to go, but would not score another field goal until the final seconds as Lycoming crept back within three at 64-61 with 21 seconds to go.

Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) connected on a layup with nine seconds remaining to give the Blue Jays a 66-61 lead, and after a missed shot Church hit two free throws with two seconds left to set the final score.

Elizabethtown led 34-29 at halftime as both teams shot an identical 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) from the field. Church and Flanagan led the Blue Jays with 11 points apiece in the opening half while Sye paced the Warriors with 11 points.

Fogel finished with nine points for the Blue Jays, while Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) and Chris Fairbanks (Lititz, PA/Warwick) netted seven points apiece in the victory. Elizabethtown finished 21-for-28 from the foul line, led by a perfect 6-for-6 performance by Flanagan.

From The Williamsport Sun-Gazette:

Lycoming men fall to Elizabethtown

By Christian Ingram,
cingram@sungazette.com

A popular saying throughout college circles is "If I don't remember it, it didn't happen."

For first-year head coach Guy Rancourt and the Lycoming men's basketball team, they might have done well to look to the past before Wednesday's home 68-61 loss to the Elizabethtown Blue Jays.

Last season the Warriors (6-5, 0-1 MAC) swept the Blue Jays (7-6, 1-0 MAC) in both home and road encounters, and that was with Elizabethtown still having the MAC's top two scorers on their roster.

Wednesday night, however, was a different story. Rancourt knew he was in for a fight before the game when he stated the keys to a Warrior victory would be beating Elizabethtown's multiple-press defense and winning the battle of the boards.

"From a press standpoint, our guys did a great job," said Rancourt. "On the rebounding end we were let down big time. We need to be a lot tougher on the boards and defensively and we can't allow the inside-out game that they had working tonight."

The aforementioned offense wasted little time kicking it into high gear as Elizabethtown came out firing from the perimeter early. Joe Flanagan, who finished with a game-high 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Mike Church, who dropped 16 points himself, were constant thorns in the side of the Warriors, opening up an early lead with great work on the perimeter.

Lycoming apologists will cite the officiating in last night's game as a large factor in the loss. The Warriors sent the Blue Jays to the line 28 times while making the trip only 12 times themselves. Numerous calls had the crowd at Lamade Gymnasium voicing their disapproval quite loudly and angrily. Despite appreciating his fans' support, Rancourt respectfully disagreed with that notion.

"Officiating doesn't play a role," Rancourt said firmly. "It's how we play the game. We needed to step up and rise to the challenge and we left a lot to be desired tonight.

The Warriors put up a solid effort on offense in keeping the game close. Forward Greg Sye scored a team-high 15 points, but the man who kept the Warriors' heart beating was reserve guard Brandon Wilkinson. The seldom-used senior only averages 6.7 minutes of action so far this season, Wilkinson went 3-5 from downtown, all clutch shots that kept Lycoming close, and finished with 14 points.

Will Kelly also had a good night for the Warriors, scoring nine points and hauling in a game-high nine rebounds, but the Elizabethtown press forced too many mistakes. The Blue Jays won the turnover battle 15-8 and were also able to narrowly edge the Warriors 32-30 on the glass, differentials that proved to be too difficult for Lycoming to overcome.

The Warriors will be in action again on Sunday afternoon when they host Widener, but Rancourt said he won't be wasting time in making sure his team understands the severity of the situation they now find themselves in, having just lost their first back-to-back contests this season.

"We'll address tonight's effort right here tonight," said Rancourt. "At midnight we're going to turn the page, put all this behind us and start to get ready for Widener.

Hope the Warriors brought their Red-Bull and No-Doz. From the edge in Rancourt's voice, it was likely to not only be a long night, but one they won't be forgetting easily.

Despite making just one field goal in a span of five minutes midway through the second half and none in the final 5:06, the Blue Jays were able to convert a 54-54 tie into an eight-point lead by holding the Colonels without a basket for four minutes during the same stretch.

MONARCH BASKETBALL OVER POWER BLUE JAYS

WILKES-BARRE--- Sophomore forward Kevin Conroy posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as the King’s College men’s basketball team downed Elizabethtown College 72-54 in their second win in as many days during the Wilkes-Barre Challenge hosted at Wilkes University Sunday afternoon.

With the win, King’s improved to 6-5 on the season while Elizabethtown falls to 6-6.

The Monarchs found themselves down early in the first half, with Elizabethtown leading 13-8 with 14:12 left. Monarchs slow down Ramapo; Wilkes stumbles

BY STEVE BENNETTSTAFF WRITER

WILKES-BARRE — Though the circumstances were much different and the stakes considerably higher the last time King’s faced Ramapo in 2005, there were some similarities between the two teams.

In 2005 when the Monarchs eliminated Ramapo in the Sweet 16 of the Division III NCAA Tournament, King’s relied on a relatively young team. That was again the case Saturday night in the opening round of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge. And just like in 2005, Ramapo likes the up-tempo style of play.

But when the Monarchs forced Ramapo into a halfcourt game and slowed things down, the RoadRunners became frustrated and once again the Monarchs pulled out the victory.

King’s placed five players in double figures, led by Chase McGowan’s 19 in a 75-74 victory at Wilkes University’s Marts Center which helped the Monarchs stop a five-game losing streak and improve to 5-5 on the year.

“Their pressure takes you out of what you want to do and defensively that is as much pressure as we are going to see,” King’s coach J.P. Andreko said. “We did enough to win the game and that is all that really matters.”

The Monarchs turned the ball over 16 times and were outrebounded 42-26 on the night, but down the stretch it was the little things that allowed King’s to finish on top. The King’s guards settled down in the second half and found the open man on the floor. And in the final 1:34 of the game went 8-of-8 from the foul line to prevent Ramapo from coming back.

“In the second half our guards weren’t running around like crazy,” Andrejko said. “They saw the double-team was coming and they waited to make the open pass. They don’t make the game pretty and there is only so much you can control. Ramapo uses the double-team to disrupt you and we were taking care of the ball a bit better.”

McGowan converted a three-point play with 4:28 remaining in the game to put King’s ahead, 65-63.

Ramapo tied the game at 69-69 with 1:47 left but Kevin Conroy hit four consecutive foul shots and Kyle Stackhouse added two more down the stretch to seal the win.

In the nightcap, Wilkes seemed content to try and win the game from the perimeter, shooting 24.1 percent from beyond the 3-point line and Elizabethtown was content to let the Colonels try and win that way. But in the end, the Blue Jays picked up a 71-69 victory.

The loss dropped Wilkes to 5-3 as the Colonels made just 7-of-29 shots from behind the arc. Colonels guard Chris DeRojas led all scoreres with 27 points with Steve Kline chipping in with 19.

The Blue Jays led 41-39 at the half and the teams exchanged the lead four times in the second half with Elizabethtown pulling ahead to stay on a pair of Kyle McConnell free throws with 8:36 left in the game. Wilkes pulled within one on two free throws from Kline but that was as close as the Colonels would come the rest of the way.

The round robin tournament wraps up this afternoon at the Marts Center with King’s taking on Elizabethtown at 1 followed by Wilkes and Ramapo at 3.
